Who we Are And why You Should Train Here

About Our Karate Dojo in Sunshine Coast

Since opening our doors, our dojo has been dedicated to sharing the traditions of authentic Japanese karate and the values that define martial arts training. Located in Alexandra Headlands on the Sunshine Coast, our dojo provides a place where students of all ages can experience the physical, mental and cultural benefits of traditional karate.

Karate is far more than a physical activity. It is part of a centuries-old cultural tradition that began in Okinawa, Japan, before evolving into the disciplined martial art known today as Karate-do — the Way of the Empty Hand. This path emphasises personal development, self-discipline, respect and continuous improvement.

Our Karate Lineage – Hayashi-ha Shito-ryu Karate-do

Our dojo proudly follows the traditional lineage of Hayashi-ha Shito-ryu Karate-do, a respected school of Japanese karate founded by Soke Teruo Hayashi, one of the most influential karate masters of modern Japan.

Through this lineage, the teachings of karate have been passed down from teacher to student across generations, preserving not only the technical aspects of the martial art but also the deeper philosophy of Budō — the martial way.

Budō represents the belief that martial arts training should develop both character and skill, shaping disciplined individuals who strive to improve themselves while contributing positively to their communities.

Bringing Traditional Japanese Karate to Australia

The Hayashi-ha Shito-ryu tradition was brought to Australia through our highly respected instructor Shihan Denis Purvis.

Learning directly under Soke Teruo Hayashi in Japan and dedicated their lives to preserving and teaching authentic Japanese karate. Their efforts played an important role in establishing traditional karate training throughout Australia.

Their teachings continue to influence many karate schools today and remain an important part of the karate community.

Sensei Luke and Our Dojo Heritage

Our dojo continues this lineage today through Sensei Luke, who began his karate journey as a young student under Shihan Denis Purvis who is our technical mentor and head of style for Hayashi-ha QLD.

Through this direct connection, our dojo remains part of a living karate tradition that extends from Australia back to Japan.

Students who train here are not simply learning techniques — they are becoming part of a long-standing martial arts heritage that has been preserved through dedication, respect and disciplined training.

Karate Training for the Sunshine Coast Community

While our roots lie in Japanese martial arts traditions, our mission is to bring the benefits of karate training to our local Sunshine Coast community.

Our martial arts classes help students develop:

  • Confidence

  • Discipline

  • Respect

  • Focus

  • Resilience

  • Physical fitness

The dojo becomes a place where students challenge themselves, build strong character and grow both physically and mentally.

A Martial Arts School for All Ages and Experience Levels

We strongly believe that karate can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age, gender or experience level.

Our dojo provides a welcoming and supportive environment where:

  • Beginners feel comfortable starting their martial arts journey

  • Children build confidence and focus

  • Teens develop discipline and resilience

  • Adults improve fitness and learn practical self-defence

Whether someone is stepping onto the mats for the first time or continuing their martial arts journey, our goal is to support their growth every step of the way.

More Than Self-Defence

Students training in our dojo learn practical self-defence skills, but the deeper purpose of karate extends beyond physical techniques.

Traditional martial arts teach timeless values including:

  • Respect

  • Humility

  • Perseverance

  • Self-control

  • Personal responsibility

These principles help students navigate challenges both inside and outside the dojo.

Continuing the Tradition of Japanese Karate

Our dojo honours the history and philosophy of traditional Japanese karate while continuing to pass its lessons forward to the next generation.

Through dedicated training, strong mentorship and a supportive community, we aim to help every student discover the lifelong benefits of martial arts.
